Sue Slavin
Sue Slavin has a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Teaching with an emphasis on Reading/Writing from Teachers’ College Columbia University. During her work at Columbia, Sue was mentored by Lucy Calkins and advised byDr. Dorothy Strickland.
Sue has been a classroom teacher for many years, teaching kindergarten through fifth grades. She has been a staff-developer in New York City Schools, New Jersey Schools, Virginia Schools, Long Island school districts, as well as schools throughout the country.
She observed, conferred and co-taught in classrooms in New Zealand; has been a presenter at local BOCES, national and state IRA and NCTE conferences as well as the Australian International Reading Conference. She was one of the first five National Trainers for Wright Group Publishers; a national presenter for Ready to Read, Richard C. Owen Publishers; Mondo Publishers, and the National Reading Consultant for Scott Foresman Publishers.
As an adjunct as well as full time staff member of The Writing Project, Teacher’s College, Columbia University, she was a Summer Institute leader, a presenter and a national Staff-Developer.
She is presently a Literacy Consultant focusing on Long Island school districts where she works in classrooms daily with teachers and their students. She conducts before and after school workshops, curriculum development workshops, and teacher “think tank” sessions.
Most recently, Sue’s work with teachers and children focuses upon scaffolding proficient reading, thinking and talking across the grades with meaningful writing and writing response. The supportive structures of independent reading, shared reading, reading workshop and writing, and the responsibility of both the teacher and the student create a predictable accountable environment for learning.
She continues to work with Mondo Publishers and is currently involved with the newly introduced AWARD Text-Technology program. Sue is the author of non-fiction Salt Water Habitats and Mountain Habitats books, and several emergent readers published by Mondo Publishing.
