Otis Kriegel
As a veteran elementary school teacher, Otis Kriegel has taught all grades, 1st - 5th, in the public schools of San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City. He received his M.Ed. in Bilingual Education from The Bank Street College of Education and has taught in bilingual (Spanish/English), monolingual and C.T.T. (Collaborative Team Teaching) classrooms.
For the past six years, Kriegel was adjunct faculty at the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University and has been a guest lecturer at The Bank Street College of Education, City College of New York, Touro College and others. Seven years ago, at the request of one of his student teachers, Kriegel created the well-received lecture, “How to Survive Your First Years Teaching & Have a Life". He has given this lecture to hundreds of pre-service and new teachers throughout New York City. This lecture was the impetus for his upcoming book, being published by Free Spirit (April, 2013), "What Every New Elementary School Teacher Really Needs to Know (But Didn’t Learn in College). He is booked to speak at universities throughout the spring.
In 2008, Kriegel created The K5 (www.TheK5.com), a website using short videos to help parents of elementary school age children deal with everyday challenges. Otis is also a working artist who has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, as well as being a featured, full page, Op Art contributor at The New York Times. The results of his project, Suggestion Box, were published in book form by Chronicle Books (August, 2005). An experienced lecturer on both art and education, Kriegel gave a keynote lecture at the 2001 California Association of the Education of Young People Annual Conference and has lectured nationally about his creative work, presenting at numerous universities and conferences, most notably the 2008 College Art Association Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas. He lives and works in New York City.
