Vicki Scott
Vicki Scott is a literacy consultant with 20 years of diverse teaching, coaching, and staff development experience in both urban and rural areas.
For the last year I have been working as a professional consultant in reading/writing workshop, genre studies, and writing across the curriculum from upper elementary to high school. Some of the places I worked in the last year are: for Mayerson Academy in the Cincinnati Public Schools (high school English and content areas), Southampton, NY (upper elementary & middle school), Monroe, CN (middle school), Bayville, NJ (upper elementary), Clifton, NJ (middle school lab sites/working with literacy coach).
I also worked four years as a Literacy Coach for New York City’s Region 9. For two years I worked half-time at The Clinton School for Writers and Artists (6th-8th) and at Hostos-Lincoln Academy (6th-12th) in the South Bronx. I continued full time with Hostos for two additional years, finishing the phase-in of the middle school focusing on an early college initiative format. I helped ELA teachers develop and implement units of study in their reading and writing workshop classrooms, worked with content area teachers to embed active literacy skills across their curriculum, and maintained and ordered all the classroom libraries. Both of these schools were part of the Teachers College Reading/Writing Project.
I also co-wrote (with Vicki Vinton and others) and facilitated for three years “Foundations of Literacy in the Middle School Classroom”, a 30-hour course developed for new teachers in Region 9. In addition, I co-developed and facilitated “Developing Units of Study Using Understanding by Design in the Reading/Writing Workshop” which was used with teachers from school in need of improvement.
Prior to working in NYC, I taught 7th grade English for three years in New Jersey where I helped my students produce the middle school literary magazine. I was an artist-in-residence for four years in the state of Arkansas teaching creative writing enhanced with art and drama. I taught in the urban areas of the San Antonio School District starting with elementary art and then moving to middle school teaching English, creative writing, and life management skills. I was also an instructor/teacher trainer for the New Jersey Writing Project of Texas for nine years.
